Feb 23, 2020 07:19PM ● By Bill Gilman

Middies, Gryphons

This is the time of year that high school basketball teams work all winter toward and the Dracut High and Greater Lowell boys' and girls' teams will be right in the thick of things.
All four local squads qualified for playoffs, with the Middies participating in the North Sectional and the Gryphons taking part in the Central Sectional.
The 2019 Division 3 North Champion Dracut boys will have the chance to defend their title, but the road won't be easy. The Middies (8-13) barely snuck into the tournament as the No. 14 seed and will open play Monday at 7 p.m. at No. 3 Newburyport (15-5).
If Dracut can pull off t upset, they would be on the road for the quarterfinals, at either No. 6 Shawsheen Tech (13-7) or No. 11 Weston (10-10), the team it beat in the 2019 final.
The Greater Lowell boys finished the regular season at 12-8 to earn the No. 7 seed in the Division 3 Central Tournament. The Gryphons open play Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m., playing host to No. 10 Auburn (10-9), a team that plays in the Southern Worcester County League (SWCL). With a win, Greater Lowell would advance to the quarterfinals against No. 2 Bartlett on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Indians (18-2), also from the SWCL, got a first-round bye.
On the girls' side of things, Dracut High snuck into the Division 2 North Sectional as the No. 12 seed with an 8-12 record. The Middies open play Tuesday at 7 p.m. at No. 5 Burlington (15-5).
If Dracut can pull off the upset, it would advance to the quarterfinals, either on the road against No. 4 Wilmington (15-5) or at home against No. 13 Somerville (8-12). Day and time are TBA.
The Greater Lowell girls posted an 11-8 record in the regular season, earning the No. 9 seed in the Division 4 Central Sectional. The Gryphons open play
Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at No. 8 Quaboag  (12-8), of the SWCL.
A victory would move the Gryphons into the quarterfinals against top-seeded Maynard High (16-4), which plays in the Mid-Wach League. That game would be Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
The complete brackets for all four tournaments can be found below.
