DRACUT - An investigation by Dracut police into a report on Wednesday afternoon of a man driving a pickup truck approaching a 13-year-old boy as he walked home from school was "unfounded and fabricated'' by the boy, Deputy Chief Stephen D. Chaput said in a press release issued on Friday.

At 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 23, Dracut police responded to Clement Road for a report of a 13-year-old boy who told his mother that he was approached by a stranger as the boy was walking home after getting off the school bus. The boy reported the man asked him if he wanted to get into the truck. The boy ran home and told his mother.

The incident triggered inquiries by news media and drew "significant'' attention on social media, Chaput said.

As police continued to investigate, the boy admitted to police he made up the story.

"The Dracut Police Department considers the matter resolved at this time,'' Chaput wrote.
