A Dracut High football season that began with high expectations, ended with disappointment, in the form of 26-20 loss to Methuen High on Thanksgiving Eve.
Allyn French capped his high school career with 104 yards rushing on 13 carries, including a 19-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Devin Lambert was 8 of 19 through the air for 114 yards and a touchdown.
But it was a trick play that got the Middies (5-5) out of the gate in the first quarter. Cam McCullough connected with Shawn McGuire for a 19-yard touchdown on a halfback option pass to give Dracut an early 6-0 lead.
Methuen (8-3) answered back with a punishing ground attack. Ricky Brutus found the end zone twice, first from 25 yards and then from 36, to give the Rangers a 14-6 halftime lead.
French's touchdown run pulled the Middies to within a point, 14-13, after three quarters.
Once again, Methuen had the answer, this time from Connor Bryant. The Rangers' quarterback tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Kareem Coleman, then later scored on a 3-yard run to push the Methuen lead to 26-13.
Dracut made things interesting, when McCullough hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Lambert to make it 26-20. But that was as close as the Middies could get.
