Menelaos “Mello” Evangelos Pappas

Menelaos “Mello” Evangelos Pappas, lifelong resident of Dracut, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, August 27, 2018. Born on March 12, 1921, he was the son of Greek immigrants, Evangelos and Soultana (Katsogianos) Pappas.

During WWII, Mello enlisted in the US Navy and proudly served his country from 1942 to 1946. He became an officer and a pilot, flying on missions in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre.

As a Navy pilot, he developed a deep passion for aviation. Upon returning home, he worked the remainder of his career as an Air Traffic Controller at Boston Logan Airport. Even after retirement, he often visited local airports to watch the planes and converse with the pilots and crew.

He married Lillian Dorothy “Dot” (Peverill), opened his heart to her four young children and added three more of their own. He was a dedicated father and a kind, gentle soul.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; sons, Robert and Michael Morley; brothers, Paul, Harry and Chris Pappas; and sister, Agnes DePetrillo.

Mello is survived by two sons, three daughters and their spouses, Raymond and Margaret Morley of Ipswich, Susan and Thomas Pappas of Easton, Gregory Pappas and Elizabeth Bengele of Dracut, Martha and Donald Simpson of Billerica, and Dorothea and Carl Slack of Westford; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held privately. Those desiring may direct memorial contributions to the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Father John Sarantos Way, Lowell, MA 01854.

The family extends a special “thank you” to the Merrimack Valley VNA and his nurses, Kristin and Nancy.

Services are under the direction of Dracut Funeral Home.
