ANDOVER, MA — State Senator Barbara L’Italien (D-Andover), candidate for Congress in the 3rd District, has called on all of her fellow candidates regardless of party affiliation to come together and sign a joint statement promising to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Donald Trump.

“The principles this country was founded on are threatened when politicians make their own careers or power a priority. In the event that Trump fires the special counsel appointed to investigate his own crimes, we cannot react as Democrats or Republicans or Independents. We need to be Americans first.” L’Italien said. “We are in a constitutional crisis if the President of the United States tries to stop the justice system from holding him accountable. There should be zero doubt of how any of us will act if it happens.”

The text of the statement candidates will sign is included below:

“With the conviction of Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen’s guilty plea and testimony that Donald Trump directed him to commit a crime, we have entered even more dangerous territory with this president. Donald Trump is being investigated for serious crimes, and he has repeatedly shown that he is willing to disrupt those investigations.

“In this country, our leaders are not above the law. That’s part of our national values, and our response to a President who puts the rule of law at risk should rise above personal political interest or party politics.

“We, the undersigned candidates in the Third Congressional District, are all committed to ensuring that the legal process involving the president moves forward without obstruction. This includes but is not limited to co-sponsoring and advocating for legislation to protect the special counsel investigation, and reinstating him and protecting the evidence he has gathered if he is terminated.”
