A 23-year-old woman faces a multitude of charges in connection with a multi-car accident Wednesday afternoon that sent four people to the hospital.
According to Dracut Police, Rosmy Brito, of Lawrence, was illegally trying to pass multiple vehicles on Route 110, when she triggered the horrific crash that ultimately involved four vehicles.
In a statement released Friday, Deputy Chief David Chartrand confirmed Brito has been charged with operating to endanger. marked lanes violation, speeding and passing in violation of pavement markings. Also, Dracut Police have are petitioning the RMV to have Brito's driver's license immediately suspended for posing an "immediate threat".
Investigators have pieced together the events of the accident, which, remarkably, did not result in any fatalities. According to the report, the accident took place just after 4:30 p.m. Brito was allegedly driving a 2003 Ford Escape SUV westbound (toward Lowell) on Route 110, along the Merrimack River. According to witnesses, Brito was weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed, in an attempt to pass multiple vehicles, despite the double yellow line.
The crash took place when Brito tried to pass a 2007 Ford Econovan. Brito's vehicle sideswiped the Econovan, bounced back into the eastbound land and slammed into a 2008 Ford Fusion coming in the opposite direction. At this point, the Escape went airborne and landed on top of a 2013 gray Volkswagon Beetle that was also traveling in the eastbound line, right behind the Fusion.
The worst injuries were sustained by Brito's passenger, a 21-year-old Lawrence woman. She was taken by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital and then Med-flighted to a trauma unit in Boston. Her injuries are considered to be serious but she is expected to survive.
The driver of the Fusion, a 45-year-old Amesbury woman, the driver of the Beetle, a 38-year-old Bradford woman, and Brito, were all transported to Lowell General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the van, identified as a 27-year-old Worcester man, was not injured in the crash.RELATED STORIES:
