Election 2018: (Video) Garry, Heisey Trade Barbs In Spirited Debate At Legion Hall

Aug 31, 2018 11:46AM ● By Bill Gilman
A standing-room only crowd of residents and supporters packed the Dracut American Legion, Tuesday night, for debates between the Democratic candidates for state representative from the 36th Middlesex District and state senator from the 2nd Essex-Middlesex District.
The event was organized and sponsored by Your Dracut Today and taped for broadcast by DATV.
The first debate of the evening pit incumbent state Rep, Colleen Garry against challenger and Dracut School Committee member Sabrina Heisey and was moderated by Jayne Wellman.
The hour-long debate featured numerous jabs back in forth, not of the personal nature but focusing on the other candidate's political positions.
Neither candidate took even one step backward or apologized for track record and what they consider to be the path the Democratic Party should be taking in the future.
Heisey embraced her position has a progressive and said the Democratic Party needs to take full advantage of its "super-majority" on Beacon Hill. She said Garry is stuck "in the past."
Garry, for her part, said her position as a "Conservative Democrat" is in keeping with the views of a majority of Democrats in the District (Tyngsboro and Dracut) and that Heisey is too far to the left.
The full debate can be viewed below. It will also be broadcast several more times on DATV Ch. 99.
Voters go to the polls for the primaries on Sept. 4.
