A young cyclist sustained significant injuries Saturday night, when the bike he was riding on Pleasant Street was struck by a car.
The accident took place just after 8:30 p.m., on a section of Pleasant Street between Sladen and Clark Streets.
According to witnesses, the teenage victim struck the front end and the windshield on the passenger side of the sedan. The driver remained on the scene and was cooperating with investigators.
The victim was treated at the scene and then taken ambulance to Lowell General Hospital for treatment. His condition was not immediately known.
Two of the witnesses to the accident were state Rep. Colleen Garry and her sister, who happened to be nearby at the time. Garry posted about the incident on her personal Facebook page.
"My sister and I witnessed a motor vehicle accident with a bicycle. It was just after dusk, the 15 year old bike rider was dressed in black and didn’t have a helmet on. So scary. He just appeared out on nowhere. I felt so badly for the driver of the car. He was so worried about the boy. I pray the boy is ok... he was speaking and moving his legs so hopefully! please make sure you wear a helmet and reflective clothes if riding in the dark."
A section of Pleasant Street was closed off for about a half-hour, while emergency crews cleared the scene. The cause of the accident remains under investigation and no citations were immediately issued.
