Here are 5 Things you should know to start your day on Thursday, Aug. 23.

1. Fall High School Sports Season Begins Today: Today is a big day in Massachusetts high school sports. While football practices began last week, every other fall sport can begin practices today. In most cases, that means Day 1 of tryouts. Good luck everyone!

2. Looking For Book Recommendations?: Finished the last book by your favorite author? Is your To Be Read pile empty? Fill out the Parker Library online survey of what you like to read and get personalized book recommendations. Paper copies of the survey are also available in our lobby.

3. Condolences: Join us in offering condolences to the family of Dracut resident William Mackey, retired assistant Fire Chief at MassPort Logan Airport. His obituary can be found here.

4.DATV Program You Should Watch: Click here to watch a special episode of "Education Matters" hosted by School Superintendent Steven Stone. The topic is school safety and the upcoming ballot vote on safety equipment for the schools. The panel includes Town Manager Jim Duggan, Fire Chief David Brouillette, School Committee Chair Joseph Wilkie and Board of Selectmen Chair Jesse Forcier.
