Aug 10, 2018 06:20AM ● By Theresa Gilman

Charles F. Stairs, Sr., “Charlie”, age 69, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on August 7, 2018.

Charlie was born on July 28, 1949 in Lowell, MA; he was the cherished son of the late Jesse R. and Nora H. (Fogarty) Stairs. Charlie grew up in Lowell and was educated in Lowell Public Schools as well as in Maine. Charlie and his father Jesse were extremely close; they shared a strong father-son bond. Jesse died 50 years ago on August 7th and was laid to rest on August 11, 1968. It may be a coincidence, but it is a nice sign that the two share the same dates.

Charlie was inducted into the United States Army on February 24, 1969; where he served the Country during the Vietnam War. Charlie received the National Defense Service Medal while on active duty; he was honorably discharged from active duty on May 1, 1971 and continued his service in the Army Reserves until February of 1975.

Charlie married Patricia A. Lapham in December of 1978; the couple lived in the Lowell and Wilmington areas before relocating to Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1987, where Charlie took a position as a long-haul truck driver. The couple lived in Fayetteville, NC for over 10 years before moving back to Wilmington in 1996.

Charlie and Patty shared many wonderful times throughout the years, they raised three beautiful children Jen, Chris and James and adored being grandparents to Benjamin, Abigail, Olivia and Chanel. Charlie treasured the time he spent with his kids and grandchildren; he always enjoyed when the grandkids visited “Grampa’s house”. Charlie also loved to spend time watching Benjamin play football. Charlie took him to his practices and never missed any of his games in Wilmington. Benjamin moved to Manchester where he was captain of the freshman team and Charlie attended all his games; he was so proud of him.

Charlie was a hard worker and really enjoyed his job as a long-haul trucker. Although the work was tiring, Charlie looked forward to seeing new places and meeting new people across the United States.

In his spare time, Charlie loved working out in his yard and doing maintenance on the family cars. He was a man of many talents; a “Mr. Fix it” who could do just about anything he put his mind to.

Charlie will be fondly remembered for his unconditional love and devotion to his family and his love for animals. He was a quiet guy, very unassuming, but always there to lend a hand to anyone in need. Charlie will forever be in the hearts of those he touched.

Charlie was the beloved husband of Patricia A. (Lapham) Stairs, devoted father of Jennifer Stairs & her husband David Kubasiak of Manchester, NH, Christopher Stairs and James Stairs both of Wilmington, loving “Grampa” of Benjamin Stafford, Abigail, Olivia and Chanel Stairs, cherished son of the late Jesse R. and Nora H. (Fogarty) Stairs, dear brother of Debra Dewitt Ahern & her husband Richard Ahern of Dracut, the late Jesse, Frank, Melvin, Eugene, Murial, Calista, and Thelma Stairs. Charlie is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Crystal Stairs, his goddaughter Cheryl Finneral, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Saturday, August 11th from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. immediately followed by a Prayer Service with Military Honors at 3:30 p.m.

Memorial donations in Charlie’s name may be made to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.
