ANDOVER, MA — State senator and congressional candidate Barbara L’Italien took the opportunity early this morning to speak to President Trump in the only way we can be sure he’s listening: through Fox News.
Due to a Fox News error, L’Italien was contacted in place of another congressional candidate to speak about her views on ICE on Fox and Friends First. Feeling a responsibility to her constituents in Lawrence to amplify their voices, L’Italien decided she would use her chance to make a statement directly to Trump.
“I’m here on this show to speak directly to Donald Trump. What you’re doing at the border is wrong. As a mother of four, I’m appalled that we are separating kids from their parents. It’s illegal and inhumane,” said L’Italien in the brief interview that can be seen here. “Stop abducting children and ripping them from their parents’ arms. Stop putting kids in cages, stop making three-year-olds defend themselves in court. Stop hurting Latino children to score political points with your base.”
L’Italien was cut off before she could complete her full statement to Trump. She released a video of her full statement on social media here.
“I’ll never forget visiting Esperanza Academy here in Lawrence not too long after your inauguration, and a twelve-year-old girl came up to me and hugged me, and told me she was afraid she would come home one day to find her grandmother, her only caretaker, had been deported,” L’Italien said. “Can you look me in the eye and tell me that girl’s grandmother is dangerous? Could you look her in the eye and say so?”
