Haverhill, MA- Alexandra Chandler has made Massachusetts history by becoming the first openly transgender congressional candidate to get on the ballot. She turned in the required 2000+ signatures on her official nomination papers to the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office in Boston accompanied by her wife, Catherine, and Holly Ryan, a pioneer in the civil rights movement for LGBTQ+ people in Massachusetts and an early supporter of Chandler’s campaign.

“Thank you to our volunteers and staff for all your work that made this possible. As a first-time candidate, as a middle-class person, as a mom, and as a transgender lesbian woman, being on the ballot is humbling. I am the first openly transgender candidate for Congress in the history of the Commonwealth to get on the ballot. Our campaign has already made history, standing on the shoulders of so many giants who came before us,” Chandler said.

Now, she added, she can offer the voters of her district vision, expertise, and leadership matched by no other candidate in this race. “Massachusetts’s Third Congressional District will have the chance to elect a Congresswoman who offers an unapologetically bold progressive agenda for the working and middle class, real experience working across divisions in Washington against our toughest problems, and tested leadership from representing complex intelligence analysis on 3am phone calls with the White House to my community health center work, to standing up for the rights of the vulnerable. I will always answer the call to serve.”

Holly Ryan noted this important day by stating: "While Alexandra Chandler makes history today, the real significance of her campaign is that she embodies a future in which it is assumed that people are judged based on their abilities only. Once you see and hear Alexandra Chandler, her abilities are what you remember. By embodying competence and compassion and sharing her talents with our nation, Alexandra makes me proud to have played a role in opening this pathway to freedom."

Alexandra Chandler spent 13 years as an analyst and leader of analysts at the Office of Naval Intelligence, where she specialized in analysis combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and arms smuggling. She is now on the ballot for the September 4 Democratic primary election in Massachusetts’s Third Congressional District, running to fill the seat of the departing Congresswoman Niki Tsongas.
