ANDOVER, MA — State senator and congressional candidate Barbara L’Italien (D-Andover) issued the following statement in response to House Speaker Robert DeLeo’s announcement that a bill she co-sponsored establishing strong extreme risk protective orders in Massachusetts will go to a vote:
“This bill will save lives. I’ve been proud to cosponsor it, and awed by the young activists like Andover’s own Charlotte Lowell who helped make today’s victory possible. They deserve so much credit.
“Massachusetts has been a national model for common sense gun control. Washington must follow our lead. We need fast action on this legislation, and Congress needs to stop kowtowing to the NRA and support extreme risk protective orders across the country.
“Both of my daughters are teachers. Every time another mass shooting bursts into the headlines, I wonder if their schools will be next. I look forward to continuing the fight to keep them and everyone’s children safe.”
Barbara L’Italien has a long record of standing up to the NRA and passing the sort of common sense gun control legislation we need.
When the federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004, she voted as a state representative to preserve it in Massachusetts. When one of her constituents was killed in Las Vegas and Congress failed to step up, she helped push through a ban on bump stocks, trigger cranks, and similar accessories in the Commonwealth. She is a cosponsor of H.3610, An Act establishing extreme risk protective orders, and was supporting it even before the Parkland shooting - which a red flag law could have prevented.
With New Hampshire just a quick drive away from her home, she understands that strong gun control laws in Massachusetts are just the start. She supports congressional efforts to encourage more states to adopt red flag laws and to allow federal courts to issue extreme risk protection orders, and is committed to moving them forward if she is elected.
