I stand in solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of young people who organized across the country for common sense gun protections. I support citizens’ rights to gun ownership, but it should not come at such a cost. We can – and must – do better to protect our children from gun violence. I greatly admire these students for their courage, passion, and ability to organize. At a time when their only worries should be homework and who they’re asking to prom, they’ve shown incredible maturity and strength in taking a stand on such an important issue.
Here in Massachusetts, we have proven that sensible gun laws save lives. Recent tragedies remind us that there is no reason for civilians to have access to military-style weapons. I was proud to vote for Massachusetts’ assault weapons ban while a State Representative. I hope that today’s march encourages other states to implement commonsense measures to end gun violence. These students are the next generation of leaders, but they need the support and partnership of today’s leaders for change to be possible.
