Marie A. McClanahan (Micalizzi)
Marie A. McClanahan (Micalizzi), age 78, of Woburn, formerly a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on March 22, 2018.
Marie was born on June 8, 1939 in Chelsea, MA; she was the dear daughter of the late Anthony and Antonia Micalizzi. Marie was raised in a large and loving Italian family who moved to Wilmington in 1948. She was educated in the Wilmington public schools and graduated Wilmington High School with the Class of 1957.
Shortly after graduation, Marie embarked on a career with the United States Air Force at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford which lasted more than 40 years. Marie had a great work ethic, thirst for knowledge, and winning personality; all of which made her so successful in her job. Marie was involved in several projects including coordinating student job shadowing at the Base and she was very active in the Armed Forces Committee for many years where she was a former officer. Marie’s efforts throughout the years did not go unnoticed and she was the recipient of the Diversity Committee Award.
In her early days working at Hanscom Air Force Base, Marie met the “love of her life”, Roy McClanahan; the couple married in 1961 and settled in Wilmington where they raised two wonderful children Kathryn and Roy. Marie cherished her role as a mother; she loved her family unconditionally and was always there to support them in whatever they were involved in. Marie and Roy, along with their family enjoyed many great years together before his untimely passing in 1988. Marie also looked forward to spending time with her siblings and their families; in her later years she took over as the “matriarch” of the family and it was a role she truly cherished.
Marie was very outgoing, kind, and generous towards others; she went out of her way to help anyone in need and was a true friend to many. Marie had a great sense of humor, she lived her life to the fullest and loved to be the “life of the party”. In her spare time, Marie enjoyed going to the Theatre and the “Pops” with her posse of girlfriends. She will be fondly remembered for her sense of fashion and for always looking like a “million bucks” wherever she went.
Marie was quite a lady in every sense of the word; she always made a difference in every life she touched. Marie will leave quite a hole in the hearts of those she loved and she will forever be missed.
Marie was the beloved wife of the late Roy P. McClanahan, devoted mother of Kathryn Gallucci of Wakefield and Roy McClanahan & his wife Denise of Woburn. Cherished daughter of the late Anthony J. Sr. and Antonia (Olivari) Micalizzi, dear sister of Anthony Micalizzi, Jr. of Wilmington, Guy Micalizzi & wife Jan of Rockport, Joseph Micalizzi & wife Jean of Naples, FL, and Jacqueline Sapp & husband Michael of Dracut. Marie is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Monday, March 26th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting Hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday, March 25th from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
