LAWRENCE, MA — Firefighter unions in Lawrence and Andover announced today their support for Barbara L’Italien in her race for congress.
Andover Firefighters Local 1658, representing 67 full-time professional fire personnel, conveyed enthusiasm for L’Italien’s leadership on a state budget amendment in 2017 to protect the pensions of retirees, including firefighters and other municipal public employees, as well as her recent leadership fighting proposed changes to retiree health benefits that were later rolled back, a major victory.
“Barbara is someone who gets in front of the issues, never hides behind them. She has always been willing to put her own neck on the line to stand up for issues that matter to first responders, public employees, and our families,” said Andover Firefighters Local 1658 President Eric Teichert. “On behalf of the Andover Firefighters and our families, we are proud to endorse her and look forward to her work in Congress.”
Lawrence Firefighters Local 146, representing 132 members, endorsed L’Italien enthusiastically, expressing that L’Italien has always held the interests of the fire service, and all people of Lawrence, in the highest regard.
“Throughout her time representing all of Lawrence, Barbara has consistently been in our corner, supporting and fighting on our side for every issue that affects fire professionals,” said Lawrence Firefighters Local 146 President Eric Zahn. “That's why our union endorsement was unanimous. Endorsing Barbara is a no-brainer, and I'm proud to give her our support - we know she will keep working by side for years to come."
“The core of my work has been on behalf of working families, and to have these two major endorsements from groups I have worked closely with is a badge of honor,” said L’Italien. “Firefighters and first responders work the toughest jobs on the front lines keeping our communities safe, and so I’m proud of the work I’ve done to improve safety, financial security, and quality of life for firefighters locally and across Massachusetts.”
These endorsements for L’Italien come on the heels of endorsements by the Massachusetts Coalition of Police (representing 20 cities and towns in the 3rd Congressional District), the Massachusetts Nurses Association, OPEIU Local 453 (the MBTA management union), Mass-Care, State Senator Mike Barrett, State Representative Cory Atkins, seven Lawrence elected officials, as well as numerous other local elected officials in the 3rd Congressional District.
L’Italien currently represents Lawrence, Andover, Dracut, and Tewksbury in the State Senate.
