(Editor's Note: the following information was published by the Mass RMV.)

Love your license photo? You may now be able to hold on to it a little bit longer. The RMV has updated the online license renewal policies, allowing customers to renew their license or ID online for two consecutive renewal periods. This change extends the length of time a customer can use an old license photo from 9 years to 14 years.

Licenses and ID’s will only need to be renewed in person at an RMV service center or a AAA location (for AAA members) every third renewal period. As a reminder, you don’t need to wait for a reminder notice to renew, customers can go online and renew up to 12 months in advance.

To be eligible for online renewal, your license/ID photo must be less than 14 years old and must have been taken after your 21st birthday. You also must be under 75 years old and have a social security number.

Not sure when you’re up for renewal? Check your license renewal status at MassRMV.com
