Thursday, Jan. 4, marked the 134th anniversary of the birth of Harry Haskell “Bucky” Lew.
Lew was born in Dracut in 1884.
So, who was Lew? And how did this native son of Dracut make history?
Bucky Lew was the first African American to play professional basketball. Of course, Lew pre-dated the modern NBA. However, there were professional club teams in the years after Dr. James Naismith invented the game in Springfield in 1891.
According to the Wright Museum, Lew was recruited to the Pawtucketville Athletic Club as their first African American player in 1902.
