November "Congress In Your Inbox" From Niki Tsongas

[In November], the House Republicans passed a damaging tax overhaul plan that they claimed would support America’s middle class. But plenty of independent analyses have shown that just is not the case. The GOP plan will raise taxes on millions of middle class families, jeopardize critical safety net programs, scrap benefits American families depend on like student loan interest deduction and medical expense deductions, add $1.5 trillion to our national deficit and more. You can read my full statement on the passage of the House tax bill in this edition of Congress in Your Inbox.
In the days leading up to the tax reform vote, I spoke out strongly against this damaging and irresponsible bill, going to the House Floor to voice my opposition and sending a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan highlighting the ways in which it will negatively impact residents of the Third District of Massachusetts.
And this week, as the Senate continues consideration of its own tax reform package, I pennedan opinion piece for The Hill that discusses how the GOP’s tax efforts would undermine and endanger one of our nation’s major conservation efforts, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, by expanding fossil fuel drilling at the site. Forty years ago, my late husband then-Senator Paul Tsongas was instrumental in passing the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, which expanded the Refuge, which is considered to be one of our nation’s last remaining truly wild places and a crown jewel of our nation's public lands. You can read my opinion piece in this week’s newsletter.
Also this month, the House and Senate passed the annual National Defense Authorization Act. I authored several key provisions to support our servicemembers both in the field and at home. However, I also have strong concerns that the bill prioritizes defense spending at a devastating cost to important federal agencies and investments that are critical to maintaining our national competitiveness and the future of our country. In this edition of Congress In Your Inbox, you will also find articles on my address at the MerrimackValley Chamber of Commerce's annual Women in Business Conference, and on my efforts to restore funding to community health centers.
I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed a peaceful Thanksgiving and look forward to a joyful holiday season. Thank you for staying engaged and as always, don't hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments or concerns.
