LOWELL – Thirty-four new corrections officers joined the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office when they graduated from its 41st Basic Training Academy in a ceremony held Friday, December 8, at Lowell Memorial Auditorium.  Over 250 family members and friends gathered for the ceremony.

“Today these new officers join one of the oldest, proudest law enforcement agencies in the country,” Sheriff Peter J.

said. “These 34 officers are part of our future – a future I am confident will see the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office continue to be a recognized leader in the field of corrections.”

In addition to Sheriff Koutoujian, graduates also heard remarks from Lowell City Councilor Rita Mercier and Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Class President Jonathan Doster.  Lowell Police Superintendent William Taylor offered the graduation’s keynote address, and spoke to the new officers about the responsibility and trust placed in them by the wider community.

State Representative Paul Brodeur (D-Melrose) as well as Lowell Fire Chief Jeffrey Winward also attended the ceremony.

Those who graduated Friday completed 12 weeks of classroom and practical training focused on interpersonal communications, corrections and criminal justice systems, transportation procedures, defensive tactics, and firearms and first responder training, among other areas. Graduates had to successfully pass classroom, physical fitness and firearms tests, and participate in on the job training.

The graduation marked the seventh during Sheriff Koutoujian’s six-year tenure, with over 250 academy-trained officers joining the ranks of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office in that time.
