Congresswoman Niki Tsongas speaks at River Day 2017
(Editor's Note: the following information was provided
by the office of Congresswoman Niki Tsongas.)
The rivers and waterways around the Third District have played an important role throughout our region’s history. They powered the mills of the industrial revolution, have helped sustain our health by providing clean drinking water, created tremendous recreational and economic opportunities, and brought natural beauty to our daily life.
That is why each year I host River Day to highlight these important natural resources, and to recognize the efforts of local organizations and individuals who have dedicated themselves to preserving them. This year, my 11th annual River Day took place on Saturday, September 23 with stops in Andover, Haverhill and Devens. It was a great day along the Third District rivers, where I was able to meet with groups like Groundwork Lawrence’s Green Team and the Shawsheen River Junior Rangers, Team Haverhill and paddle along the Nashua River. I send my thanks to everyone who joined me this year and encourage you to learn more about River Day here. You can also view some photos from River Day 2017 on my Facebook Page.
In addition to our beautiful natural resources, the Third District is also home to a strong tradition of military service. This proud tradition was on display last week when Mr. Avak Avakian of Concord, MA was inducted into the French Legion of Honor. I was honored to join Mr. Avakian and his family for the ceremony conducted by Valery Freland, Consul General of France at the Residence of France in Cambridge. The French Legion of Honor is the highest decoration bestowed by the country of France. It is bestowed upon those who have served France defending liberty. American veterans who risked their lives during World War II and who fought on French territory qualify to be decorated as Knights of the Legion of Honor. You can read more about Mr. Avakian in this week’s edition of Congress in Your Inbox.
As Congress head’s back to Washington, D.C. this week, we face a long slate of important issues. First and foremost, thanks to the voices of millions of Americans speaking out in opposition, the latest GOP effort to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act - the Graham Cassidy bill - was pulled from consideration in the Senate because it lacked support. This irresponsible and dangerous health care plan would have raised premiums and stripped away pre-existing condition protections, among other devastating provisions. It is now time for Members of Congress to work together across the aisle to create a plan for improving the Affordable Care Act and protecting access to quality, affordable health care for the American people.
We must also address the urgent needs of Puerto Rico as they reel from the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria. I believe we must hasten the effort to provide substantial funding and resources to Puerto Rico. I have also cosigned a letter urging the President to further mobilize the Department of Defense to immediately deploy additional assets in support of Puerto Rican and U.S. Virgin Island recovery efforts.
Also in this week’s newsletter, you can read about a recent grant received by the Winchendon Fire Department.
Thank you for staying engaged and don't hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments or concerns.
