At least 58 people died, including a police officer, and more than 500 have been wounded in what has been called the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
The guman, believed to have been acting alone, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay, that has served as his sniper's nest during the 15-minute attack.
Reaction on social media from throughout the region has ranged from sorrow to anger to astonishment that something like this was able to take place.
See below for a sample of local reaction.
As after #Orlando, I will NOT be joining my colleagues in a moment of silence on the House Floor that just becomes an excuse for inaction.— Seth Moulton (@sethmoulton) October 2, 2017

Horrible waking up to news of the #LasVegasShooting. Sending thoughts & prayers to victims as we all try to make sense of a senseless act.— Barbara L'Italien (@teambarbara) October 2, 2017
White men are the force behind most mass terrorism attacks in the US, yet you're mad NFL players kneel during the anthem. Wake up, America.— Noelle Boc (@LibrarianNoelle) October 2, 2017
