The air is crisp and cool. The Patriots are back on the field. Another season of Game of Thrones has concluded. These are sure signs that autumn is upon us, and there is no better way to kick of the season than attending the 17th Annual Dracut Old Home and Firefighter’s Day. The festival will be taking place at 9am on Saturday, September 9th, outside of the Englesby Elementary School at 1580 Lakeview Ave.
Since 2001, Dracut has held an annual ‘homecoming’ by way of hosting an Old Home Day. Last year was their biggest event to date, having an attendance of over 12,000 people enjoying over 200 booths and activities. Thanks to the continued hard work and dedication of the Committee, led by Chairman Ken Cunha and Vice Chairman Dave Paquin, with the help of many volunteers, vendors and our diligent emergency services, it promises to be even bigger and better this year.
Come rain or shine, the festivities planned are sure to entertain Dracutites of all ages. You can get an early jump on your holiday shopping by perusing rows of seemingly endless booths featuring local crafters, artists and vendors. You can get a glimpse of community organizations as well as catch demonstrations in other booths. There will be a 5k road race, antique car show, live entertainment, music, children’s rides and tempting food from your favorite local eateries - to name just a few of this year’s highlights.
With the addition of the Dracut Firefighter’s Day, residents have the added bonus of watching captivating safety demonstrations and friendly firefighter competitions. There will also be children’s activities, antique and new firetrucks on display and of course, a visit from Sparky the Fire Dog! This is a great opportunity to meet our hard-working firefighters and thank them for their sacrifice and service and for keeping us all safe.
So take some time to bring the family down to have fun mingling with friends and neighbors and indulge in the best of what Dracut has to offer! If you enjoy yourself, which is almost certain, consider volunteering for an Old Home Day event in the future and help keep this wonderful event a cherished annual tradition. If, for some reason, you unfortunately can’t attend, please bear in mind that roads in and around the area may be closed or subject to heavy pedestrian traffic and detours to accommodate for the festival, so plan travel accordingly.
