Melanie Jane (Pratt) McGrail–Wood

Melanie Jane McGrail–Wood, maiden name Pratt passed away peacefully at her campsite in Auburn, NH, on August 17, 2017, after struggling with cancer an awful disease in a unique person. She passed with members of her loving family at her side.

It is with deep gratitude the family would like to thank Amedysys Hospice Care for the professional, loving and dignified care provided to this wonderful woman.

Melanie was born in Dracut, Massachusetts, on November, 2, 1954, the daughter of the late Marjorie and William Pratt. She is survived by her children, Maggie McGrail, Eric McGrail and Kyle Brockelbank; six grandchildren, brother Bruce Pratt, her husband of 12 years, Richard Wood, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Melanie spoke fondly of growing up with her brothers and sisters in Dracut, MA many memories were shared of her off and on residency of York Maine a town that was the center of her idyllic life.

Her early professional career included both owning and operating McGrail Real Estate, accompanied by her late husband, Thomas B. McGrail. Melanie went on to own her own child care centers in both Maine and Massachusetts where some of her dearest friends helped with the day to day operations..

Melanie’s personal life was filled with motorcycle rides that more times than not resulted in at least one game of Keno unless Foxwoods was on her agenda. Mel was a natural host at “Mel’s Camp” where, if she wasn’t on the beach taking in the sun, she was sitting in front of one of her famous campfires. Mel had a knack for giving all who visited camp the feeling of relaxation with her forever lit candles and lanterns that hung round her campsite. Melanie will be fondly remembered by her loving family, many dear friends and a husband who felt that every night was “date night.” Melanie was a shining example of an enthusiastic, friendly, confident, beautiful and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt grandmother and businesswoman. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, and we thank her for all the gifts she shared throughout her life. We hold you in our hearts forever.

Melanie will be laid to rest on the Nubble of York Maine by her family in a private ceremony in these upcoming weeks.
