John F. McNiff Jr.
After high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp in the late1930's. He often talked about those years, having been stationed in Colorado and helping to support his family during the Great Depression. He was unable to serve in the military during WWII as a result of having had Polio as an infant. After the CCC’s, he worked for a parachute company in Lowell, where he met his future wife, Barbara. They were married for 73 years.
John retired in 1985 after 15 years at the US Post Office. Prior to that, he was Assistant Sales Manager for many years at Synthetic Yarns Inc., formerly of Lowell.
An early riser, he never approached a day without a plan to be someplace and accomplish something. He loved gardening and loved sharing his harvest with family and friends. He was organized, thoughtful and meticulous about every task set before him. His sense of humor and outlook on life and everyday matters was unique to him. He lightened up a room and could make everyone around him laugh unintentionally. His greatest joy was spending time with family and friends, traveling and spending winters in his home in Oldsmar, FL.
He is survived by one son Jack McNiff and his wife Marianne of Kissimmee FL., and three daughters, Linda Leedberg and her husband Raymond of Nashua, NH, Lois Lamarre and her husband Kevin of Dracut MA, and Carol O'Leary and her husband William of Aldie, VA., 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Cesarz of Lowell MA. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, his best friend and twin brother William McNiff, Howard McNiff and Donald McNiff and 7 sisters, Kathryn Brown, Helen McGrath, Frances Tarello, Ruth Cooper, Hazel McNiff, Phyllis Cooper, and Janice Livingston. He was also predeceased by his treasured Uncle Harry McNiff of Lynn MA.
