The Dracut High softball team picked the perfect time for an offensively explosion.
Through the first three games of the Division 2 North Tournament, the Middies really didn't need to do much offensively. After all, sophomore pitcher Ryley White White had allowed just one run, including a spectacular perfect game in a 1-0 win over Danvers in the semifinals.
But Swampscott High got to White in the championship game on Sunday. No worries. the Dracut offense had White's back, erupting for seven runs in the fourth inning, en route to a 12-5 win and the D2 North Sectional Title.
The Middies (20-4) will take on South Sectional champ Norton (25-1) today (Tuesday, June 13) at 5 p.m. at Endicott College for a birth in the State Championship game.
Swampscott jumped out to a 3-0 lead, helped in part by some shaky defense from the Middies. Dracut responded with a single run in the third but still trailed, 3-1, with two outs and nobody on in the fourth, when the fireworks started.
Dracut reeled off seven straight hits and suddenly the Middies had an 8-3 lead. Nadia Saari, White, Sabrina Morse and Kayla Gooch al drove in runs as part of the rally.
Swampscott (15-10) fought back against White and closed the gap to 8-5 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. But Dracut answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth to put the game away.
Dracut's 1-0 win over Danvers in the semifinal round was a very different type of game, as the Middies' struggled to mount an offense.
But White was on top of her game and didn't need much support. The sophomore retired all 21 Danvers batters, striking out 11 along the way.
Lauren Byam played the offensive hero for Dracut, stroking an RBI double in the fourth inning for the only run of the game. White added a pair of hits, including a double.
