Edward 'Ed' Thomas McDermott
Edward was born in Lowell (Ayers City), on December 7, 1923, a son of the late Edward L. and Theresa (Roth) McDermott. Ed was a graduate of Keith Academy, Class of 1941 where he served as captain of the football and track teams, and also as treasurer of his class.
Ed enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and served for 3 years in the Pacific Theater during World War II, with the 109th Battalion. The 109th made amphibious assault landings on the beaches of Tarawa, then Guam, then Okinawa. When the war ended, Ed returned home after being discharged with honor.
He married his high school sweetheart Tina Fadden and in 1951, Ed and Tina moved to the Collinsville section of Dracut where they raised 5 children and lived for the rest of their lives. Ed was employed with the New England Telephone Company for over 38 years. He loved playing softball and throwing horseshoes with his many brothers and brothers-in-law. Ed loved playing golf, especially with his best friend and nephew, Dick Fadden. Ed claims Dick taught him 'how to hit a golf ball'. His greatest joy was time spent with his family, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Especially in the later years, he loved watching sports on TV, and old westerns like 'The Virginian', and 'Gunsmoke', and his favorite comedy show, 'Everybody Loves Raymond'. Ed was a communicant of the former St. Mary of the Assumption Church, and in his last years, he watched Mass daily on Catholic TV.
Edward is survived by his three children, William McDermott and his wife June, of Tyngsboro; Sheila McDermott and her husband Mark Salem of Dracut; Kevin McDermott and Ruth Szettella of Lowell; a daughter-in-law, Bette McDermott, of Bluffton, SC; his brother, Arthur McDermott of Lowell; and his sister Dorothy Smith, of College Park, GA. Ed was the loving grandfather of 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and will also be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ed was the father of the late Edward T. 'Rocky' McDermott, who died on January 12, 2009; and Nancy McDermott, who died on January 2, 1975. He was predeceased by his brothers Thomas McDermott and Robert McDermott, and his sister, Rita Vines. Ed was also the beloved grandfather of William James McDermott, who died on July 31, 2014.
