Obituary: Karen (Laurent) Blatus, 49

Karen (Laurent) Blatus

Dracut, MA - Karen (Laurent) Blatus, 49, died on Monday, May 8, 2017, at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, surrounded by her family, after a hard-fought battle with AML cancer. She was the beloved wife of Peter J. Blatus with whom she spent 26 years of marriage.

Born in Lowell on June 8, 1967, Karen was a daughter of the late Albert and Aline (Berard) Laurent. She graduated from St. Louis Academy.

Karen dedicated her life and time to her children and family whom she loved dearly and spent her earlier years often looking after her nieces and nephews. 

Karen was a genuinely happy person, full of life and love. Even greater was the innate strength she possessed through her initial battle with breast cancer which she fought through to remission 5 years prior. After her cancer returned, she continued to fight to the end, inspiring all those around her.

Along with her husband, Peter, Karen is survived and will be deeply missed by her 4 children, Hayley, PJ, Olivia, and Colby Blatus of Dracut; 8 sisters, Denise Dion and her husband Paul of Lawrence, Collette D'Amour and her husband Richard of Pelham, NH, Michelle Maillet and her husband George of Lowell, Susan Brunelle and her husband Louis of Sandwich, NH, Dianne Chandonnet and her husband Roland of Pelham, NH, Priscille Tuson of Lawrence, Jeanne Davis and her husband Richard of Pelham, NH, and Jackie Quinn and her husband Michael of Lawrence; 3 brothers, Louis Laurent and his wife Jocelyn of Derry, NH, Marc Laurent and his wife Laurie of Hollis, NH, and David Laurent and his wife Tammy of Dracut; mother-in-law, Antoinette Blatus of Kingston, NH; brother and sister in-laws, William J. Blatus and his companion Sally of Nashua, Stephen Blatus of Dracut, Angela Blatus of Kingston, NH, Michael C. Blatus and his wife Ching-Chi of Medford and Andrew Blatus and his wife Agnes of Dracut; as well as her beloved dog, Nikko and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Karen was predeceased by her niece, Jennifer D'Amour, and her father-in-law, Michael Blatus.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all of the nurses and staff at both Lowell General Hospital and Tufts Medical Center for all of the love, care and support they showed to Karen and her family during her time there. 

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on FRIDAY, May 12, 2017 from 3 - 7 p.m. at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Ave, Dracut. Her funeral service will be held from the funeral home on SATURDAY, May 13, at 9 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to follow at 10:30 a.m. in St. Francis Church in Dracut. Burial will be held subsequently at the St. Joseph Cemetery Chapel in Chelmsford. Donations may be made in Karen's honor to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.
