After a mild and rather dry January, the Merrimack Valley is getting a full dose of winter, and then some, in February.
Schools throughout the region, including Dracut and Tewksbury, have already cancelled classes for Monday, as the region was hammered Sunday afternoon by its third significant storm of the past week, possibly dumping more than a foot of snow between Sunday and Monday..
The latest forecast from the National Weather Service calls for the Merrimack Valley to get 12-18 inches of snow from the storm.
The NWS has issued Winter Storm Warning for Middlesex and Essex Counties, starting Sunday at 7 a.m. and continuing through Monday at 7 p.m.
* LOCATIONS... Include Massachusetts, north of the Mass Pike. * ACCUMULATIONS...12 to 18 inches of snow. * HAZARD TYPES...include moderate to heavy snow, as well as blowing snow. * TIMING...spotty light snow this morning will become steady snow late this morning and then heavy at times this afternoon into the day on Monday, ending during the afternoon and evening hours. * WINDS...North 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. * VISIBILITIES...One quarter mile or less at times. * IMPACTS...The heavy snow will make many roads impassable and may produce widespread power outages due to the weight of the snow on tree limbs and power lines. Strong winds will lead to blowing snow...reduced visibility...and additional power outages. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Winter Storm Warning is issued when an average snowfall of 6 inches or more is expected within a 12 hour period...or for 8 inches or more in a 24 hour period. Travel will be slow at best on well treated surfaces...and quite difficult on untreated surfaces. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel...keep an extra flashlight...food...and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
Complicating the storm cleanup this time around will be the accumulation of snow over the past week. With very little melt between storms, finding a place to put new snow could be a challenge for some homeowners, Drivers may find the streets have narrowed just a bit, as plows continue to push the snow to the side of the roads.
Among the cancellations for Sunday:
The basketball game between Liam Nation Athletics and the Heated Lions, scheduled for 1 p.m. at Tewksbury's Wynn School Gym has been postponed and rescheduled for Feb. 26.
We will keep you updated on postponements, closings, road conditions and power outages throughout the storm.
