MEMA Issues Warning About Extreme Cold, Windchill

Extreme Cold

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has released the following information regarding severe weather conditions expected to impact the Merrimack Valley and most of Massachusetts over the next 48 hours.
Bitterly cold temperatures, combined with sub-zero windchill is expected to put the region in a deep freeze on Friday, This will be followed a mix of wintery precipitation on Saturday.
The MEMA Alert reads, as follows:

Situation:

The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting extreme cold across the region beginning Thursday night and lasting into Friday morning. Dangerously cold wind chills of -10 degrees along the coast to -25 degrees across Northwest MA are expected as overnight lows drop into the single digits to several degrees below-zero. Friday high temperatures are forecasted to be in the teens. Sustained west winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are possible. For Cape Cod and the Islands, sustained west winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70mph are possible. Strongest winds are expected between 8pm Thursday through 4am Friday.


Accumulating snow is forecasted starting late Friday night into Saturday morning. Snowfall totals could reach 1-2 inches over Southeast MA and 3-5 inches over north, west and central portions of MA, with up to 8 inches possible over higher terrains such as the Berkshires. Expect hazardous driving conditions and visibility reduced to half a mile. Transition to rain is expected during Saturday from south to north and a brief period of freezing rain during the transition is possible across the interior with the potential for a light glaze.

Impacts:

Impacts related to extreme cold may include:
•Potentially life-threatening wind chills
•Frostbite and hypothermia possible for those without proper protection from the cold. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes for unprotected skin.
•Possible increase in fires from alternative heating sources or people trying to thaw frozen pipes with blow torches
•Possible carbon monoxide poisoning from alternative heating sources
•Possible vehicle failure
•Possible water main breaks and pipe bursts

Impacts related to damaging winds may include:
•Scattered to numerous power outages
•Downed tree limbs 
•Driving will be difficult in open areas and on bridges
